What are windshield wiper arms?
Windshield wiper arms are exterior auto components that connect the wiper blades of your car to a motor for clearing your windshield of any obstruction, rainwater, dust, and snow. The wiper arms hold the frames and blades in the wiper assembly for consistent and efficient wiping that won’t damage your windshield during operation.
What are car wiper arms made of?
Most wiper arms and assemblies are made of galvanized or stainless steel to make the assemblies resistant to rust and corrosion. Wiper arms are also precast during production to fit the specific dimensions of particular car models. The assemblies then receive a protective layer of paint or similar coatings for additional durability.
What are the different types of windshield wiper arms?
Wiper arms can have side posts, J hooks, or bayonet-style designs. These different types of wiper arm assemblies make installation and dismount easier and ensure that they stay in place. Hook-type wiper arms can also have a tab to secure each of the wiper blades onto their respective wiper arms during operation.
Are windshield wiper arms universal?
Unlike some exterior car accessories, windshield wiper arms are not universal. These assemblies have specific designs that can only fit particular models. Windshield wipers can either be conventional, flat, or hybrid assemblies. Modern vehicles use flat wipers with tensioned metal flexors holding a rubber element on the wiper assembly. Even if these are common wiper arms, they will not fit all vehicles.
Why are my wiper arms failing?
Your wiper arms can fail when they become bent out of place, loosen from the motor, or start showing signs of corrosion. When this happens, your wipers won’t be able to clean your windshield properly and cause streaking and stuttering wiper blades. The wiper frames can even damage your windshield instead of cleaning it during operation.
