Decelerate Your Vehicle Smoothly with a Brake Drum
Brake drums are extremely durable and can withstand extended use over prolonged periods. As a crucial component of vehicle safety, it works in tandem with the brake shoe.
Together, they help decelerate wheel rotation, which is triggered whenever you activate the brake pedal. When this happens, your drum brakes could generate heat and cause your brake drums to expand. Exposure to intense heat may require you to exert more pressure when using the brake pedal.
Apart from providing stopping power, the drum also absorbs and discharges heat created through friction. Keep in mind that you should avoid water from seeping into the drum as it could interfere with the deceleration process. This issue can persist until enough heat is generated to vaporize the water.
Even though this part is extremely durable, it is still prone to damage caused by dirt, grime, and salt. If you start to notice performance issues, make sure to conduct a replacement right away.

What is the function of a brake drum?
Brake drums work together with brake shoes to put your car to a halt. Stepping on your brake pedal causes the hydraulic fluid to push the wheel cylinder pistons to nudge the brake shoe outward. This will then make the brake liner come in contact with the brake drum, creating friction to slow down the wheel while dissipating the heat from the braking.
How long do brake drums last?
Brake drums last between 150,000 to 200,000 miles with proper maintenance. However, some factors, such as constant braking, exposure to different elements and driving conditions, and natural wear and tear, can deteriorate your brake drums faster and require replacing.
What are the symptoms of a bad brake drum?
A grinding noise while braking is one of the most common indications you have a bad brake drum. If your brake pedal feels too soft or low, this means that the gap between the shoe and the drum is wider, which creates a larger clearance between the two before contact is made. This makes braking harder since the drum is already worn out.
Are there different kinds of brake drums?
There are three main types of brake drums: leading or trailing shoe types, duo-servo types, and twin leading shoe types. These brake drums have different designs of how the brake shoes press onto the drums during braking.
What happens if I drive with a bad brake drum?
It’s generally unsafe to drive your car with a faulty brake drum since you won’t be able to slow down or stop your car reliably to avoid collisions. You can also damage the other components of your brakes if you keep on using damaged brake drums, which can also cause significant and costly repairs in the long run.
